Phil Schiller announced iPhone 3GS at WWDC 2009
No Steve Jobs this time, but observers agree that Phil Schiller seems to be doing a good job introducing new Apple gear at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference 2009. Most of interest to us is the announcement of iPhone 3GS. The S stands for Speed. So what does the new iPhone bring to the table?
According to ZDnet blog, it’s 2.1 times faster to launch messages, 2.9 times faster to load large web page. It includes OpenGL|ES 2.0 and has whooping 7.2MBps HSDPA built-in. The main changes beside the processor speed is the camera featuring:
- Tap-to-focus – tap an item in the photo to focus on it.
- Improved low-light sensitivity.
- Automatic macro photographs (10cm).
- Video capture, 30fps VGA.
- Videos show up in photo library. You can trim them, share via email, MMS, YouTube, Mobile Me.
iPhone 3GS also features voice control which works as you hold down the home button on any application and say one of floating commands. Examples “play the killers”, “play for more songs like this” and a lot more.
Other features:
- Built-in digital compass.
- New accessibility settings.
- Nike+ support.
- Hardware data encryption.
- Improved battery life. 9 hours on WiFi, 10 hours watching video, 30 hours audio, 12 hours 2G talk, 5 hours 3G talk.
- Greener materials, packaging.
The iPhone 3GS is expected to be available in 7 countries on June 19th, just after the release of iPhone OS 3.0. Price will range from $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB) each comes in blank and white. Existing iPhone 3G will still be on the market, but at $99. Sorry iPhoners, but the rule of new features seems to be pushing old iPhone prices down.
All the prices mentioned are for AT&T customers, so they may vary here in the UK and other countries.
